HOW PHYSICAL ACTIVITY CAN HELP ALLEVIATE THE STRESS OF FEAR AND REDUCE NEGATIVE EMOTIONS
Physical activity is not just about losing weight or keeping you fit, but it has various other benefits related to mind and body. People who are into physical activity are more active, have more sense of well being and are relaxed about their lives. It is a powerful cure and a medicine for many mental health challenges.
Physical Activity and Negative Emotions
Negative emotion is any feeling that causes you to be sad and miserable; they take away confidence from you and make you feel bad about yourself. Negative emotions can be hate, jealousy, anger and sadness. These emotions stop people from thinking and behaving sensibly in situations, hence, stop us from enjoying life.
To be emotionally stable, one should take care of their physical needs that not only include exercise but also proper sleep and nutrition. Being physically active helps you process negativity in a better way allowing you to stay positive and focused. Many researches tell us that people who are physically active are generally happy. Exercise promotes chemicals in your brain that improves mood and helps in feeling relaxed. By being physically active, the brain releases endorphins – chemicals that make you feel good about yourself.
Physical Activity and Stress of Fear
Fear is one of those powerful emotions that have a very strong effect on your body and mind. It can shatter one’s sense of the world. Fear can either last for a short period and then pass or can last longer and never leave you alone. In few cases it can make your life miserable and can also take over your life by affecting your eating habits, concentration level, ability to sleep, enjoy and also demotivate you to stop going to work or school.
To overcome the stress of fear, physical activity plays a huge impact on alleviating it. If you exercise regularly, increase the amount of it and if you do not exercise at all, start doing that already! Exercise requires concentration that can help you take your mind off your anxiety and fear. When you are worried and having stress attacks about something, you tend to take quick breaths that take your fear and anxiety level to a whole new level. To overcome with such situation, one should relax, take deep breaths from the abdomen and reverse these sensations.
Here is a simple exercise to quickly deal with your panic attacks;
- Sit or stand in a position by keeping your one hand on your chest and other hand on the stomach.
- Through your nose, take a slow breath inwards counting till three.
- The hand that is on your stomach should rise and the hand that is on your chest should move very little.
- Hold your breath and count till seven.
- Exhale with your mouth on a count till eight while pushing out air as much as you can while contracting the abdominal muscles. The hand on the chest should move very little while the hand on the stomach should move in when you exhale.
- Repeat the cycle till you feel relaxed.
